Asian Jewel Lifetime Achievement

The Edinburgh entrepreneur and philanthropist, Dr Wali Tasar Uddin, MBE has received an award for Lifetime Achievement at the Lloyds TSB Asian Jewel Awards. Dr Uddin is Chairman and Chief Executive of Britannia Spice.

Dr Uddin, pictured at the awards ceremony right, is a respected leader of the Scottish Asian community with an unsurpassed and exemplary record in helping improve the lives of those living around him - and those in his native land of Bangladesh.

The Asian Jewel Awards, now in their fourth year, celebrate the outstanding contributions that British Asians make to life in 21st Century Britain. They were announced on 11 February 2006

Khalid Darr, Chairman of The Institute of Asian Professionals, which organises the awards, said: "These awards are an example to all of the many ways in which the Asian community is contributing to Britain's economy, culture - and ultimately its standing in the world.

"The winners are a shining example to Britain as a whole - and a beacon for the British Asian Community. For every winner here this evening there are thousands more out there quietly working for a better Britain."

Respected both throughout Europe and Bangladesh as a successful businessman and for his acumen in the restaurant profession, Dr Uddin is regarded as a community leader and an outstanding humanitarian.

Dr Uddin said: "I'm deeply honoured to receive this award from the Institute of Asian Professionals. My philosophy in business is to ensure top quality service for all my customers at all times - whether at my restaurant, Britannia Spice, or in my other businesses. People respect you when you have determination, dedication, honesty and integrity.

"I also put a lot of energy into supporting those who are less fortunate in life and I believe this is an area where we can all help to make the world a better place to live in. You have to give something back to society.

"All this has meant hard work over many years which has not been possible without the support of my team - family, friends and employees. It is humbling to have that success recognised with this Lifetime Achievement award."

Mike Fairey, deputy chief executive of Lloyds TSB said: "The contribution of Asian community British life is astounding and this year's winners are shining examples of their talent and determination to succeed. Through our continuing support for these awards we want to help give British Asians the recognition they deserve and we hope that this year's winners will inspire many more to follow in their footsteps."
