Festival Celebration
Britannia Spice teamed up with one of the sensations of this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe for a celebration evening. Fringe-First winning dancers and musicians from the Sri Lankan group Children of the Sea entertained guests at Britannia Spice on Sunday 21 August 2005. Performing at the Royal Botanic Garden, the Children of the Sea's show grew out of a project for Sri Lankan teenagers who were affected by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.
The Britannia Spice chefs prepared a special three-course buffet which included unique dishes from Sri Lanka. Diners enjoyed an exuberant performance blending the strong rhythms of the Sri Lankan music with the grace and elegance of the young dancers.
The exotic menu which the Britannia Spice chefs had created complemented the performance of these Edinburgh Festival Fringe sensations perfectly. The Children of the Sea were awarded a Fringe First - the Fringe's premier award for new drama - for their magical work based on Shakespeare's story of Pericles, whose wife and daughter are swept away and then returned. It won wide acclaim for its "upbeat and sometimes hilarious" scenes which blend with "moments of heart-breaking loss".
Dr Wali Uddin, the chairman and chief executive of Britannia Spice, was delighted to be able to work with the performers and celebrate the success of their project in Edinburgh.
"We immediately hosted a fund-raising dinner in January to contribute to the humanitarian effort," said Dr Uddin. "Now, seeing these teenagers performing here in Edinburgh reminds us that good things will come out of those terrible times. I know our diners enjoyed the experience of watching excellent entertainment while eating exotic food from the performers' homeland," he added.
